Tiled cities, a wine valley, palace gardens, and volcanic islands rising green out of the Atlantic.
There's the mainland — Lisbon's tiled hills and fado, the fairytale palaces of Sintra, the old university taverns of Coimbra, and Porto looking out over the Douro with its Port cellars and the most beautiful bookstore in the world. Then there are the Azores, a cluster of green volcanic islands out in the Atlantic where you canoe across crater lakes, soak in mineral hot springs, and watch whales surface off the coast. They feel like two different countries, and you can do one or weave them together.
Either way, I build the days around how you actually like to travel — slow mornings or full ones, cities or trails, wine or waterfalls — and handle every transfer, guide, and reservation so all you have to do is show up and feel it.
Wind through Alfama and Graça across Lisbon's seven hills, then climb to São Jorge Castle for the view. We close the day with a fado show and dinner in the neighborhood where the music was born.
Skip-the-line entry into the Pena Palace crowning the Sintra hills, then a long, leisurely picnic laid out in palace gardens — the kind of afternoon you don't want to rush.
A walk through Porto's UNESCO old town and São Bento Station, your own tile to hand-paint in a traditional workshop, and time at Livraria Lello before crossing to the Gaia cellars for Port above the river.
The gilded Joanina Library at one of Europe's oldest universities, then a walking food tour through the old taverns — the Portugal that most travelers drive right past between Lisbon and Porto.
On São Miguel, a jeep tour over the twin crater lakes of Sete Cidades, a canoe across the Furnas lake, and a long soak in the iron-warm thermal pools of Terra Nostra Park.
Head out from Ponta Delgada to watch whales and dolphins surface in the Atlantic, hike to the Salto do Prego waterfall, and end on a black-sand beach — adventure island at its best.
From start to finish, everything about the planning and the trip was perfect.
